While we’re waiting for the first Mo Dotti’s proper album to be released in the course 2024, Gina Negrini’s band continue to prove how much power-pop and shoegaze are alive and kicking in the west coast area. “For Anyone and You” held intact the formula of the previous two EPs, but adds some extra saturation and contrast to the palette. Recorded by drummer Andrew Mackalvie (part of Cupid & Psyche) and mastered by Mark Gardener of Ride fame, the new single moves the center of gravity towards the shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine ( the intro of the song almost quotes the intro of MBV’s “Only Shallow”), and towards the rarefied noise of bands like Lush and Drop Nineteens. The B-side, “Late August, Early September” instead shows the most intimate and poppier side of the band, and highlights the beautiful voice of Gina Negrini in a ballad reminiscent of Cardigans and Seablite.
