“Peel me an Orange” is the third single extracted from the Dead Bandit’s forthcoming sophomore, Memory Thirteen, set to be released on February 9th by Italian label Quindi Records. I already made clear my personal inclination for the music of the Canadian-American duo a month ago, on the occasion of their first single, “Staircase,” a vivid example of how Swann and Schimpl are recalibrating and enriching the sonic palette of the band, predominantly post-rock, with injections of dub, dream-pop, and ambient elements. “Staircase” showcased a dub undertone, while “Memory Thirteen,” the second single released at the end of last month, revisited post-rock textures reminiscent of the Chicago Tortoise-Gastr del Sol lineage, recalling in the bassline some dynamics reminiscent of FACS. With the third single, “Peel Me an Orange,” we delve knee-deep into the sonic universe of kranky catalog.
The track begins with a dark and enveloping drone reminiscent of both Labradford and the dark-tinged atmospheres of MJ Guider. After a minute and a half, it opens up to a dialogue between a dirty pasture of noises and a clean guitar worthy of Grouper’s Ruins, then in the last two minutes fully unfolds into melodic clearings in the style of the Aerial M. Dead Bandit has managed to construct and encapsulate a narrative miniature in four minutes and twenty seconds. “Peel Me an Orange” is the psychedelic synthesis of a film noir seen during a lucid dream. “Peel me an Orange” è il terzo singolo estratto dal secondo disco dei Dead Bandit, Memory Thirteen in uscita il 9 febbraio per Quindi Records. Ho già confessato una mia personale inclinazione per la musica del duo americo-canadese un mese fa, in occasione del primo singolo, “Staircase,” già quello un primo esempio di come Swann e Schimpl stiano ricalibrando e arricchendo la palette sonora del gruppo, prevalentemente post-rock, con iniezioni di dub, dream-pop e ambient. “Staircase” mostrava una sfumatura dub, “Memory Thirteen,” secondo uscito alla fine del mese scorso, riprendeva i sussulti post-rock del lineage di Chicago Tortoise-Gastr del Sol, ricordando nella linea di basso alcune dinamiche proprie dei FACS, col terzo singolo “Peel Me an Orange” ci addentriamo e affondiamo fino alle ginocchia nell’universo sonoro del catalogo Kranky. Il pezzo inizia con un drone scuro e avvolgente che ricorda tanto i Labradford quanto le atmosfere darkeggianti di MJ Guider, dopo un minuto e mezzo si apre a un dialogo tra un impasto sporco di rumori e una chitarra pulita degna della Grouper di Ruins per poi aprirsi del tutto a schiarite melodiche nello stile di Aerial M negli ultimi due minuti. I Dead Bandit sono riusciti a costruire e racchiudere una miniatura narrativa in quattro minuti e venti secondi, “Peel Me an Orange” è la sintesi psichedelica di un film noir visto in un sogno lucido.
