If previous album, Human Giving, was maybe Darto’s most cohesive and mature album, Tolting represents the freer, more experimental and chaotic side of half-siblings Candace Harter and Nick Marsh. Actually it contains tracks recorded between 2009 and 2019 and published as loose singles, b-sides and various compilation tracks , thus is a kind of radiography that clearly shows the skeleton of a sound that cannot stand still and cannot help but mixing different genres and styles.
Sixteen tracks in 64 minutes of multiform and crazy music, starting with the almost martial pace of “Bottom Floor” and first single “Fundamental and Slyme,” halfway between the mellowest moments of Diiv and the airy harmonies of “Strawberry Field Forever”-era Beatles. “Healeah” is a noise-rock in perfect Dinosaur Jr. style, with the voice left a little behind the distorted trebles of a lazy guitar, while “Pontious Pilate” evokes the more slacker and cuddling Yo La Tengo. Unleashed garage-psych-rock episodes, like “Rehab” and “Arboretum,” are balanced by Broadcast miniatures like “World’s Worth” and “Bay Area Man,” and more experimental episodes like “Rejoinders” and “Curious Commotion” are counterpointed by no wave interludes like “Carving Time.”
After all those 64 minutes it’s a nice thing to know that Darto exist somewhere out there, it’s nice to be able to enter their world, which, however hidden, will always be at hand for those looking for it.

Se il precedente Human Giving era forse il disco più coeso e maturo dei Darto, Tolting rappresenta il lato più libero, sperimentale e sporco dei fratellastri Candace Harter e Nick Marsh. In realtà contiene tracce registrate tra il 2009 e il 2019 e pubblicate come singoli, b-side, tracce su raccolte varie, e è quindi una specie di radiografia che ben mostra l’ossatura di un sound che non riesce a stare fermo e che si diverte a mescolare generi e stili.
Sedici tracce in 64 minuiti di musica multiforme e folle, a partire dal passo quasi marziale di “Bottom Floor” e da “Fundamental and Slyme,” singolo che preannunciava l’album e che inizia con una mini polifonia vocale che sfocia in una melodia a metà strada tra i Diiv più pastosi e le aperture armoniche dei Beatles di “Strawberry Field Forever.” “Healeah,” è un noise-rock in perfetto stile Dinosaur Jr., con la voce lasciata un po’ dietro e sepolta dai toni alti di una chitarra fortemente distorta mentre “Pontious Pilate” evoca gli Yo La Tengo più slacker intimi. Episodi di garage psych-rock scatenato, come “Rehab” e “Arboretum,” sono bilanciati da miniature broadcastiane come “World’s Worth” e “Bay Area Man” e episodi più sperimentali come “Rejoinders” e “Curious Commùotion” sono contrappuntati da intermezzi no wave come “Carving Time.”
È bello sapere che là fuori da qualche parte esistono i Darto, è bello poter entrare nel loro mondo, che per quanto nascosto sarà sempre a portata di mano per chi lo cerca.
